Surface Design Unit

Surface Design Requirements
Students will create a surface design piece or pieces based on one or more techniques learned during our sample portion of this unit. They can choose one to three themes to help develop ideas.  The piece(s) should be based on color, emphasis and contrast in some way. On the back of this page, complete 8 preliminary sketches for this design.  T-shirts are available for purchase for this unit.  Prices are listed on the door.  A final design will be chosen from your preliminary sketches.

Design
A center of interest (emphasis), color and contrast in your piece is key to choose as you design this piece.  The final design(s) must be original.  Images cannot be taken from the internet.  Personal photographs are well suited for this assignment. Words, numbers and symbols may not be used unless they are applied as a texture.

Finishing
These pieces must be ready to display or wear to be considered finished.  For example, silk screened t-shirts must be heat set. Wall hangings must have a covered back with a hanger.  This can be done a couple of different ways.

Surface Design Learning Targets
-students will learn to create a piece (functional or decorative) using one or more surface design techniques.
-students will learn to use compositional rules learned earlier this semester to design their piece(s).
-students will learn to create original designs of their own making.  Photo/images can be used as reference only, and not copied.
-students will learn to apply high quality finishing techniques to all their pieces that will allow them to be used and displayed.

Evaluation
Students have two weeks in class and after school, ie or study hall to complete the piece.   In addition, students will be graded on overall design/composition and craftsmanship.
