Fabric Dying Unit

Fabric Dying Requirements
Students will:

  • Create a dyed fabric piece or pieces based on one or more techniques learned during our sample portion of this unit.
  • Choose one to three themes to help develop ideas.
  • Create piece(s) based on color, emphasis and rhythm in some way.
  • Choose from Silk Painting or Batik. Tie dye can be selected, if something is made out of the tie dyed fabric. Tie dyed sheets and t-shirt can be made at any time, but will not be graded as the final piece. There are dye fees for sheets and t-shirts. Prices are on the door.
  • Complete 8 preliminary sketches for this design.
  • Seek out peer feedback
  • Complete a sketch of the final design. A final design will be chosen from your preliminary sketches, and will be based on the peer feedback. The sketch for batiks and silk paintings must be life sized for tracing with gutta or pencil on selected fabric.
  • Students may request up to a yard of fabric each term. Silk scarves and t-shirts are available for purchase for this unit.
    • T-shirts-Small-XL $3.00 each
    • Silk Scarves- extra practice pieces or 11 x 11=$1.00 (not suitable for final), 22 x 22=$2.50, 15” x 60”=$4.25, 30” x 30”=$4.50,
35” x 35”=$4.00, 45” x 45”=$8.50

Design
Planning a center of interest (emphasis), color and the rhythm of your pieces is key as you design this piece.  Your final design(s) must be original.  Words, number and symbols may not be used.  If you are planning to tie dye, you must plan to create something with the fabric, and have a second dyed piece like a small batik or silk painting to create on the days the fabric is dying.

Finishing

These pieces must be ready to display or wear to be considered finished.  For example, photo boards must have a covered back with a hanger.  Silkpaintings and batiks must be dry-cleaned.  Dry-cleaning costs $2.00 per piece. Batiks must have finished edges or be made into something to be displayed or used.

Fabric Dying Learning Targets
-student will use the principles and elements of color, emphasis and rhythm to design their piece.
-student will use one or more fabric dying technique learned while sampling to create their final piece.
